Home: Final Images

My final Home images all express experiences I have at home:

The family breakfast.

The lovely smell of flowers.

Our pet bird Wendy.

The sight of the colourful flowers on the kitchen’s window sill.

And finally, the welcome sign and the home number on the front of the house.

All the imaginary can be described as the ordinary but these simple things make up the feeling of being home for me. Since images can’t hold memory because that is a human thing, the imagery substitutes for it. They communicate through signalling taste, sight, audio experiences as stated in Land Matters: Landscape Photography, Culture and Identity by Liz Wells.

In order to add more to this project I would combine this idea of experience through imagery with my home in Lincoln. I could combine imagery from both Nottingham and Lincoln into one to express how home to me is 2 places now I’m at University.

Out of all the photos this one was my favourite:

DSC_8881

I like how the duck stares into the camera. The colours are in harmony in this image as well since the image consists of mainly shades of green and orange/brown. The composition of this image is also very pleasing as the duck is centre of the frame and anchors the overall image. The orange brick foreground also stands out well in contrast to the murky green of the water.

My favourite images are:

DSC_8833

The flowers on the window sill that fill the kitchen with its sweet aroma. The colour brightens up the room and really pops in this image as it contrasts with the stark background.

Our pet bird Wendy fills my home with the sound of bird song, I like how her green feathers, just like the flowers in the previous image, really stand out in contrast to dark green and white background.

The final image I really liked from this shoot was the breakfast table. This image really makes me feel the experience of having a family breakfast together at the table. The sight of a table full of food is something I miss at University.

With all these images colour is key to bringing out the vividness of the colours. By increasing the colour in the editing process will really increase the power of the experience photographed.

Home: Initial thoughts

After moving to Lincoln, I have two homes now. I still count my original home as my actual home place but Lincoln is now like a home to me.

So when thinking about the photos I will take, I will experiment with imagery from Lincoln and photos from my actual home in Nottingham.

“such imagery is not about place itself so much as about the experience of place”
Wells, Liz. (2011) Land Matters: Landscape Photography, Culture and Identity.

I found this quote interesting as it highlights images of place can express the experience of being there. I will use this idea to inform my photographs and think about the associated experiences I have in each place.

So before shooting I thought about imagery I relate to home in…

..Lincoln:
Ducks and Swans
Boats
My Uni Room and Kitchen

..my home in Nottingham:
A table full of food
The front entrance of my house
Flowers
Our pet bird
