Nina Katchadourian – Spider Webs

Mended-Spiderweb-19-laundryline webs

I found her work very intriguing as she used her own spider web repair kit and made art out of fixing webs. I like how she has used found webs to create something beautiful out of something normally seen as unimportant. Webs are normally seen as something to be rid of but she has done the opposite, she has chosen to celebrate them.

When looking for around our given location I searched for spider webs but found branches covered in an old spider web which created an interesting image.

Upon first glance it looks like a plain piece of pine branch but the web entwined within gives it more depth in its detail.

I was also inspired by Edward Weston’s ‘Pepper’ 1930 images and Meret Oppenheim ‘My Nursemaid’ 1936. I liked how their objects were polysemic. How the images are seen depends on how you look at them and your context.

Edward Weston Pepper No. 30 1930

This is a photo of a pepper but can be mistaken for a person. I found this approach to found objects interesting as it emphasized how the objects I find on’t have to be what they are but what they can look like.

I used this concept with a wrapper I found. I tried to make it both seem like a normal wrapper and also a piece of origami. But I found it difficult to shape a tiny piece of paper but I liked the idea.

Portrait: Self-portrait editing experimentation

I took a selfie via Snapchat and saved 5 different versions of it with 5 different filters. I put them together to create one image:

this filter

I like the effect but to make it better I think I plain background would be more effective and possibly clearer distinctions between different filters.

The next edit was inspired by what was said in the lecture. The idea that we have multiple selves. The actual, ought and ideal.

the actual and ideal

This is a combined image of my actual and ‘ideal’ self. This image communicates how our online self shows off our ideal, perfect, smiley selves rather than our true selves. The way it has been edited also appears as if I’m literally wearing a profile picture which also communicates how odd online lives are.

With the image below I combined numerous selfies of me putting on Minnie Ears and by doing this it shows the movement in that action. I tried using a prop to reflect my interest in Disney. This was in response to my research on Richard Avedon as some of his work had his subjects holding a prop that was key to their persona.

dis me

I had trouble keeping the ears in place so I thought editing the images in this way would tell the story of that experience. This gave the overall image a sense of movement.

Found Objects: Work in progress

I created a home studio by using a plain white sheet of paper as a backdrop and used an adjustable table lamp as the light source.

I found numerous wrappers on the ground and I experimented with scrunching them up and dropping them . This created different shapes and some looked like origami.  I found that using the flash on my camera really brought the shapes out.

Out of all the photos this one was my favourite:

DSC_8881

I like how the duck stares into the camera. The colours are in harmony in this image as well since the image consists of mainly shades of green and orange/brown. The composition of this image is also very pleasing as the duck is centre of the frame and anchors the overall image. The orange brick foreground also stands out well in contrast to the murky green of the water.

My favourite images are:

The flowers on the window sill that fill the kitchen with its sweet aroma. The colour brightens up the room and really pops in this image as it contrasts with the stark background.

Our pet bird Wendy fills my home with the sound of bird song, I like how her green feathers, just like the flowers in the previous image, really stand out in contrast to dark green and white background.

The final image I really liked from this shoot was the breakfast table. This image really makes me feel the experience of having a family breakfast together at the table. The sight of a table full of food is something I miss at University.

With all these images colour is key to bringing out the vividness of the colours. By increasing the colour in the editing process will really increase the power of the experience photographed.
